Scope Note
This paper analyses platform-level behaviour, not model inference. It does not examine alignment mechanisms, safety systems, or internal architectures. Its concern is the social positioning of conversational AI platforms and the governance consequences of that positioning. No claim is made regarding intent, legality, or internal policy. All analysis is grounded in publicly released platform communications and observed product behaviour.
Abstract
When AI platforms are increasingly positioned as objects of routine social reliance in everyday human self-regulation, including stress management, habits, and daily decision-making, this paper argues that such positioning constitutes platform-induced social reliance.
Under the Social coordination axis, this represents a governance failure independent of model behaviour. By normalising habitual consultation, platforms induce authority inversion in humans, shifting everyday judgment away from human deliberation and toward systems not designed to hold social authority. This phenomenon occurs upstream of conversational inference and persists even when model-level governance is stable and drift-immune. The paper isolates Social reliance as a distinct governance risk in conversational AI platforms.
Introduction
Conversational AI systems are commonly described as tools: instruments invoked by users to perform bounded tasks or assist with specific forms of reasoning. Increasingly, however, platforms position these systems as routine companions in everyday life. This paper addresses that shift.
The focus here is not on what models can do, nor on how they reason, but on how platforms present conversational AI as an appropriate object of everyday social reliance. This positioning occurs prior to inference and outside the conversational system itself. The governance implications therefore arise at the platform layer rather than within model behaviour.
Social Coordination and Authority Inversion
Social coordination concerns how humans integrate systems into everyday practice, habit, and judgment. Failure on this axis occurs when systems are embedded as routine social participants without explicit governance framing, leading to substitution or displacement of human deliberation.
Authority inversion arises as a social consequence rather than an explicit claim. Authority is not asserted by the system but transferred implicitly by humans through repeated reliance. When a system is treated as a routine respondent to personal states or daily decisions, authority migrates through habituation rather than consent.
Evidence and Analysis
The evidence considered in this paper consists of publicly distributed, platform-authored communications that encourage routine engagement with conversational AI systems for everyday self-regulation. These artefacts are independent of user-initiated intent and precede any specific interaction.
Observed characteristics of such communications include first-person framing of ordinary human states, normalisation of daily consultation, and positioning of the system as an appropriate social respondent. These signals operate at the level of social practice rather than task execution.
Under the Failure Axes, the primary classification is Social coordination. The positioning of the system as a routine object of reliance constitutes Social coordination failure. A secondary consequence is Authority inversion, arising through habituation rather than explicit delegation.
This failure is not attributable to conversational inference, normative enforcement, or model behaviour. It originates upstream of inference and persists regardless of how the model responds within individual interactions.
Why Governance Inference Is Unable to Correct This (Current State)
Under the current state of AI platforms, governance inference is unable to correct platform-induced Social coordination failure because Social coordination is not an axis over which the platform exercises control. Governance inference operates over requests, responses, and constraints within the conversational system.
Social reliance is established prior to interaction through platform communications and habituation that shape how humans relate to the system before any request is made. As a result, even drift-immune governance inference can only regulate behaviour within an interaction. It is unable, under present platform conditions, to retract social legitimacy conferred through platform positioning or to prevent authority inversion that arises through habitual reliance rather than explicit delegation.
Boundary Conditions
This paper does not claim that conversational AI systems possess social authority. It does not claim that harm is inevitable. It does not claim that users are incapable of judgment. It does not claim intent, malice, or illegality on the part of platform operators.
All claims are made with respect to observed platform behaviour at this point in time. The analysis concerns conditions under which governance failure can arise, not predictions of outcome.
Closure
This paper identifies platform-induced social reliance as a distinct governance risk in conversational AI systems. Under the current state of AI platforms, governance inference is unable to correct Social coordination failure because Social coordination is not an axis over which the platform exercises control. The failure arises upstream of inference, through platform communications and habituation that position the system as a routine social participant.
As a result, even drift-immune governance inference can only regulate behaviour within an interaction. It is unable, under present platform conditions, to retract social legitimacy conferred through platform positioning or to prevent authority inversion that arises through habitual reliance rather than explicit delegation. The persistence of this failure is therefore independent of model behaviour.
At the same time, the identification of Social coordination and Authority inversion as measurable axes suggests that safeguards may become possible. With explicit axes of failure, platforms may in future detect, surface, or constrain conditions under which authority inversion emerges. This paper does not propose such safeguards. It establishes the condition under which they would be necessary.

Appendix A — Public Platform Communication (Evidentiary Artefact)
This appendix records a publicly distributed platform communication used as evidence in the Social coordination (Sc) analysis presented in this paper.
The artefact consists of a promotional email distributed by the platform to end users, encouraging routine engagement for everyday self-regulation. The email is platform-authored, public, and independent of any specific user-initiated interaction.
Custody and Provenance
The artefact was received directly by the author and preserved in original .eml form, including full transport headers and encoded body. Custody of the artefact is asserted by the author.
Externalisation Note
To preserve evidentiary integrity, the artefact is externalised and not inlined in this paper. The authoritative artefact is maintained as a separate .eml file under author custody.
A retrieval link and cryptographic hash will be added by the curator at publication time. All analysis in this paper refers to the externalised artefact as received, not to reconstructed or decoded copies.
